I spent a good amount of time generating academic prose about the period described in this novel. This book made me realize I could have had a lot more fun. A real act of imagination--a heady read.

This was my introduction to Butler! This publisher loves re-releasing her series(es) as single volumes. I think this one is 3 novels in 1. Definitely my favorite -- the people feel more real than her other works (than I've read), the aliens are awesome, and I have a thing for post-apocalyptic scenarios.

this was a really interesting book, and though i disagreed with his interpretation, it was insightful and thought provoking. my biggest issue is that i felt he tried to intimidate his readers by assaulting them with a use of sources that they could not possibly compete with - his use of sources was selective, intentionally ambiguous and occasionally not presented a contextually accurate/fair manner.
