This book was originally written by Roy in French, and I read a translation by Hannah Josephson. I learned of it at work one day; we had a substitute librarian who is from Canada, and she told me that this is her favorite book. She told me that the original French title translates to "Secondhand Happiness" which I feel would have been a more fitting name for the book. It's about a family (Lacasse) at poverty level in Montreal at the beginning of World War II. The city has many destitute citizens, and quite a few of the male characters join the army because it is the only way to support their families. At the center of the story is Florentine, the eldest daughter in the Lacasse family, who manages to scrape up a living for the family at a diner, and falls unfortunately and violently in love with an emotionally unavailable former-orphan-turned-industrious-engineer. Things do not run smoothly. Meanwhile, her father is unable to hold a job, her mother is pregnant with her millionth child, one of her brothers is spending money he promised to the family on a prostitute, and her youngest brother is in the hospital with leukemia. Before he went to the hospital, his greatest wish was a tin flute to play with, which the family was unable to afford. In the hospital, his nurse purchases one for him and, depressingly enough, he finds that it's not that great after all. Hence the name of the book. It was certainly a downer at times, but from what I can tell, it is true to this era in Montreal and definitely riveting and well written. I adore the character of Florentine. She's horrible at times but one can't blame her.
