Richard Adams is a remarkable writer, and this is a remarkable novel. I can't really add to the enormous body of writing and comment around this book, but I will recommend that the reader shouldn't stop here, as the Plague Dogs is even better, if less concise. ...The film is also a joy!
A wonderful book. Since it's the story of an African girl who was kidnapped and brought as a slave to the Carolinas, I expected it to be very dark. But Hill's main character, Aminata, is so strong, so vital, that the story becomes much more than the sum of its heart-breaking details. It's ultimately a very redemptive book--even triumphant.
