3.5 stars. It was not a book I wanted to race through, but I was happy to go back to it and read a chapter each night. While many of the stories have a sad feeling about them, I sensed an underlying theme of hope which made this bok less depressing than it could have been. It's a novel of short stories dealing with the characters in town, in which Olive appears in ecah story - some as a major character, others as just a glimpes. I generally don't like short stories, because if they're good, they draw me in and I want to know more (and therefore I'm frustrated the story is short) - and if they're not good, why am I reading them? But this was a nice mix. I still read chapters where I wanted to know more about what happened to a character, but the book would give you little glimpses sometimes of what was happening to others you knew about. Very interesting concept for a book, interesting to see the main character through the eyes of so many other people. It's probably not a book for everyone, but I really liked it.

I can name approximately half a dozen boys over the last several years telling me I had to read this book. It was essential, a must read! I caved. Got it in audio format, because I’m grooving it right now and settled in for the long haul. I now have to apologize to the first five guys who said to read it and I ignored. Great book!
