hmm, i think i missed this novel in high school and college. i just finished it last night. not meaning to sound trite: i really enjoyed this novel. the animosity towards the 'okies'; the overall dehumanization of people; and the role of machines and industry replacing man relates so clearly to the debates of capitalism/global economy/immigration that goes on today. similar issues, similar reactions on the domestic front - but i love that the ending (and through different characters in the novel) there is a clear picture of hope against the mounting injustice.

There is not a better translation of this timeless masterpiece than this one by Raffel. Norton really knows how to pick them. Raffel is engaging and true to Cervantes's voice. There is humor! Who knew this book was so funny? I found the entire book to be very entertaining and easy to read, largely due to the careful and conscientious translation. LOVED IT!

What genius it is to marry to completely different genres and times together!
