About the transition from an oral to a written culture in England. It's beena while since I read it, but I remember telling Ben how awesome it was, so it must have been. I do remember that the literacy rates he gave for the non-nobility were suprisingly high. Given the lack of detail in this review, perhaps it is time for me to reread this book.

What DIDN'T I learn from this book? Dense, fascinating and thought-provoking analysis of how humans got to be the way they are, intellectually and behaviorally.

I wanted and expected more realistic drama! Instead I was bored. Diary format is usually pretty interesting but I felt that it just didn't work for this book. This is one I'll probably forget about since so many more titles similar to this are grittier and more memorable.
