This is a good picture book for dealing with bullying: not just the fact that you have to stand up for yourself, but that you should stand up for others who are bullied. It just takes one. Also teaches colors and numbers. I like the clean, simple format with lots of white space.

Judi Barrett's story is a plot-less story that describes why different animals should not wear clothing. The illustrations, done by Ron Barrett, have an enhancing relationship with the text. The humor of the story is amplified through the illustrations. The illustrations show the animal that corresponds to the accompanying text, on a full-white background. Some animals are done in color, while others are not; however all the clothes are colorful. The illustrator uses crosshatching to show texture and shadowing. The text is very bold and large and consumes one entire page, for every two-page spread. Green, red, orange and white are the most dominating colors of the images and backgrounds. Although the story doesn't really tell a story it is still very entertaining. Without the illustrations, some of the text would be very dry and boring and meaningless. Overall, a very appropriate story for young readers and easy to use as a read-along because of the large text.

I would give it a 4.5 really, since I very much enjoyed reading it at the time, but in retrospect, I wouldn't call it a most deeply affecting book. The sensory descriptions of Les Halles and the historic narrative of the times are very good, but the main story of the confused would-be revolutionary Florent and the opposing petite bourgeois ways of his brother Quenu is lacking something like real passion... the whole thing seems very carefully and expertly researched but not actually lived. It is a very solid book still, of course, and poses many deep questions about the structure of society and the roles of individuals and their values. The hunger of the thin and the abundance of the fat are movingly described, as are the struggles of Florent to bring up his little brother when they are left with nothing, and the simpleton ease with which Quenu slides into his life of abundance. I most liked the story of Cadine and Marjolin, who live outside of all rules, picking off the scraps of the market like sparrows for as long as that lasts.

Tina Fey is funny as always. It's an entertaining biography to say the least, but I wish it would have delved deeper than it did. If you're a fan of the Chelsea handler books, you'll like this.
