Tad Williams is probably third on my list of fantasy authors (Tolkien, 1st; Kay, 2nd). This trilogy ("Memory, Sorrow and Thorn") is very good. Warning: It's very long. The third book has subsequently been separated into two separate books (Part One and Part Two), but the version I read was in one hardcover, and if I remember correctly it was around 1000 pages [just checked Amazon--it's 1,104 pages]. This series is very, very good. It's complex and takes a while to get going, but the world Williams creates is intriguing and completely involving. Good stuff.

For someone who didn't study history, this has been a great tour through Europe from 1945 to the present. The writing is clear and insightful, but I started to find that my eyes were glazing over, so I have put it down for a little while. My co-clerk and I gave a copy to our judge last year (a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former Army intelligence) and he loved it.
