I don't really remember what exactly happened in it, but I do remember that I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would

I usually enjoy these books in Oke's Women of the West series, but this one just fell flat for me. The details about living in the back country and trapping were interesting, but the religious aspect took over the entirety of the back 1/3 of this book and sort of fell flat for me. Of all of these I've read, it seemed like the actual plot was thinnest in this one. Not as good as I hoped, but not terrible.

This book was bought for me by my boyfriend for Christmas 2008, and although he had read it some time ago, I have to admit I had never really heard of this series (or the author) before. I read this book whilst on holiday, and enjoyed its complexity, detail, and characters, though once I'd finished it, I couldn't help but think that the series had been slightly too long, and the outcome didn't really make much sense. Now, I know as a fiction/fantasy book, they're not necessarily meant to 'be logical' as it's just a story, but for anyone that has read these books, I wonder if they also thought that seeing as the whole series was basically a bit of a test for the characters in the novels, when the storyline was over, nothing had really been achieved. These stories were complicated, and consist of magic, love, trust, lust, violence, and politics. I would be lying if I didn't admit I had to re-read some chapters just to actually try and understand what had just happened. The 'shadow-shifting' chapters I found dull and hard to read, as to me, they didn't really add a lot to the overall story or atmosphere. I did like this book, though I do feel the overall ending was a bit of a let-down.
