With some provisos over his more speculative entries, an excellent critical look at the problems of modern history teaching and the difficulties of cultural criticism. The level of historical comprehension in this country is, just from my own highly unscientific sampling, appalling. The things people don't know about their country---whether accurately portrayed or not--is amazing and frightening. However, I find some of his naivete as to why this is the case a bit much to take. It's been clear for decades that the purpose of public education is not the teach critical thinking but to produce useful citizens. All the difficulties and misunderstandings with our educational system evaporate once that is understood. However, this book is good "seed corn" for a beginning appreciation of the gap between reality and classroom requirements.
