This whole series is fantastic, however I would not start reading the series with this book. It is an important book because the characters from this book repeat or are referenced to in many of the preceeding books but PEOPLE OF THE WOLF is a dark, dreary, cold, and barren read. Set in the deepest part of the ice age, the background creates a depressing scene but it is essential to the series as a whole. Definitly worth reading but not recommended as a jumping off point.

I was disappointed. I think the movie is better.
