It seems to be fashionable these days to write stories with thoroughly unlikeable central characters. This is a risky strategy and only works if the book is sufficiently well-written to keep your attention despite the lack of anyone to connect with. This book is a real departure from Ian McEwan's usual style. It's a comedy (albeit a dark one) but it's classic McEwan in many other ways - clever, engaging and very easy to read. I really enjoyed it, but I would say it's nowhere near as powerful or moving as, for example, On Chesil Beach.

Okay, has a wierd political message that ruined a "fun" book, like the musical alot more than the book!!
