Truly one of the most remarkable books I've ever read. It's certainly my very favorite. Markus Zusak has a talent for description, and his poetic voice lends the narrator of The Book Thief a sympathetic ear. The story is told by Death, an entity who focuses on colors so he won't have to face the broken "leftover humans." When he finds the story of the young book thief, Liesel Meminger, he becomes interested, and what he finds is a tale so heartbreaking and encouraging by turns that it captivates him. And he offers to tell us the story. The Book Thief is a near-600 page masterpiece. The words flow with such elegant grace and startling imagery (he compares a smile to a bruise), you'll be haunted long after you finish the book.
