The story is about a slave girl owned by Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. Her support for either side in the battle wavers depending on who she thinks is most likely to grant her freedom. If she would still not be free, does it really matter if everyone else is too? I appreciated the conflict she feels over this and her yearning for the freedom of spirit. The book was often almost poetic in its style when dealing with her struggles and the tragedies she faces. It took me some time to get through this. I started listening to it, but it did not draw me in like some audios will--the pace was just too slow. Finally, after giving up on that and getting the book from the library, I was able to move through it quick enough to get attached to the characters and care to finish it.
