I'm going to make people mad here, but I think this is a prime example of a book that got its reputation simply because the author was African. It's a decent read in every respect, but no more. The prose is unstimulating, the conclusion feels rote and predictable, and not particularly moving. Or maybe I'm just cold and unsympathetic; hey, that's what my ex-girlfriends used to say.

Hands down, the BEST Sedaris book. 'Nuff said.

This was my first introduction into the world of Tim O'Brien. The novel was required reading in my eleven grade literature class. My teacher was an Vietnam Veteran and coincidentally share the author's sir name. Although I've had two grandfathers, one step grandfather, one uncle, and a best friend endure the hardships of war, i never have. My older brother can related to the military life depicted in this collection of short stories, where I can only be an distance observer. Reguardless of my lack of military expierence, this collection of stories gave me a glimpse of the emotional frenzy. O'Brien is relentless in his depiction of the harrowing effect of war. His and his friends expierences demand attention and he succeeded in grasping mine!!! READ THIS NOVEL OR ANY OTHE O'BRIEN NOVEL!!!!
