Jane Austen is said to have created a heroine only she would like. I am inclined to believe she succeeded, as I spent most of the book annoyed with Emma. It was not Emma's fault. I got the sense that if she had not been such a spoiled kid she would have been much more interesting. In spite of Emma being always wrong about everything until the end the comedy of manners held true. There are rivals and love returned and rejected. It was refreashing to have the heroine never feel pressured to get married to insure her wealth and ability to maintain her lifestyle, unlike Pride and Prejudice or Mansfield Park. Overall I liked the book, and it's hard to hate the inspiration for Clueless.

I really loved Walking the Bible, his other book and so when this came out I couldn't wait to read it and I loved it more than Walking the Bible. He goes into the history of the places he visits and not only talks about how it relates to the bible but how it relates to the time and place of then and how it relates now. It was just an extremely interesting book. I want to read it again just to get all of the details.
