This was a good book because I liked how sort of simple it was. I liked that Owen gave her a blank CD that said Just Listen. I love all of Sarah Dessen's books and this is no exception.
I repent: I was wrong when I said this book was boring and only talked about yams. It turns out that only the first third is boring and talks about yams. The rest of the novel depicts a family, a town, and a tribe falling apart. The fear in this sentence killed me: "It seemed as if the very soul of the tribe wept for a great evil that was coming--its own death." The way colonization creeps across and insinuates itself into the landscape makes for frightening, heartbreaking reading.
