I can't help it, I just love a good Crusie book. I'm only embarrassed at how long it took me to get around to reading this one. It was a great story and, as always, the dialogue was snappy and smart and made me laugh.
So, this book has gotten a lot of press. If you haven't heard about it, you might be surprised to learn that this book, with a pretty, but ambiguous cover, is a woman's memoir of growing up under the thumb of a pedophile. I knew what I was getting into, but I was still really unprepared. The book is graphic, unsettling, and I finally had to skip ahead because I really wanted to be done with it. Her relationship with her abuser is horrific, but it's no worse than the verbal and emotional abuse she experiences at home. Fragoso's childhood is difficult to read through--that she lived it, and is now a successful writer with a family of her own, feels like a miracle. It's hard to separate the book, and how well it is written from the content. Fragoso is a good writer, but I can't say I'd recommend this to anyone.
