Very comparable to "97 Orchard Street, New York". I preferred that book's telling of the story of Lower East Side immigrant life through the lives of real families, but I think children would find the modern-day pictures in this book more interesting, as they are in full color & may give children a better feel for what the tenements actually looked like.
It's all about Hassan.....
This series is the fantasy I recommend for people who don't like fantasy. I particularly like that the characters change over time, something which happens too rarely in most high fantasy.
The language is simply beautiful. And the story is beautifully melancholy. Depressing until you understand that Isabel is not a fallen heroine, but rather, she does not truly rise until the end.
See the title . . . that's about it! Cute.
