One of my favorite books when I was in Elementary School.

I read 'The Magicians' by Lev Grossman earlier in the year and loved it. It was a great book, riffing on the nature of Fantasy as a genre with particular pokes and nods at the Harry Potter and Narnia books. It was Hogwarts meets Bret Easton Ellis' 'Rules of Attraction', fully of angsty teenagers acting how they really act at college or university ie, sex and alcohol and drugs and...err...umm, Magic! Now I've finished 'The Magician King', Grossman's sequel to 'The Magicians' and not only have the characters matured, but so has Grossman's writing, plotting and characterisation. This is a truly brilliant novel, focussing on the nature of the hero and the highs and lows of wish-fulfilment. 'The Magicians' was a good book, but 'The Magician King' is better in almost every way. Old characters return, but this time you get a chance to really feel for them and with them. The pace and the plotting are spot on, never letting up like the occasional slow spots of its predecessor. The nods to Narnia, Potter and LoTR are still there - but more refined, subtler in many ways - and they are joined by a host of new geeky references to hacking and bulletin boards, role playing, theology and mathematics amongst many others. Overall, 'The Magician King' is a funnier, deeper and more emotional work than the previous book. Truly, 'The Magician King' is a wonderful novel. Definitely the best fantasy I have read all year, and it will almost certainly be joining the ranks of my most loved books of all time.

This is probably my favorite fiction book, It's one I recomend freqently to friends. I think I read this right around the y2k scare and I love the survival element to the book. I think I've always wondered "what if" and although this book is dark, and a bit depressing, it's one I think about constantly even years after reading it. I think that is the sign of a great book!
