** spoiler alert ** I loved the writing style of this novel. It's poetic, dreamy, and spiritual. The story itself is quite poignant -- how to be something that most people cannot fathom. The first part of the book captivated me. I found Wayne's story and perception of life compelling, and my heart broke for his parents and Thomasina, for what they knew and could not/did not say. I loved the friendship Wayne had with Wally and their magical fort above the bridge. The poetic and spiritual tone of the book continues as Wayne comes of age, but it lost momentum for me. I knew there'd have to be a big life lesson for the child that had been so protected, but still. Jeez. The story after that lost color for me. What had been poetic and dreamy came across as vague and third-person. The ending lacked luster and I felt slightly cheated, but happy (I guess) that Wayne had found his (her) path.
