I can't really believe how long it took me to get through this book. I'm not sure any book in recent memory has taken me this long, which is interesting given it's actually written in very digestible form (as a series of short stories). I'm not sure anthologies are entirely "my thing", however; I prefer to really immerse myself in a longer novel than visit many different characters and worlds too briefly. That said, Eugenides' introduction was wonderful, and really set my mindset for reading the subsequent 600 pages. As with all anthologies, several of the stories really spoke to me, while others I only finished out of a sense of duty to Eudenides than any actual investment in the story itself. While "love" is the major listed connector of the anthology, these stories, (as most good love stories), seem to express more pain and anguish than anything else. And if we're being honest, isn't that what love mostly provokes, anyway?
