This has been on my "need to read" list for years, but I'm just getting around to it now. It's one of the best books I've read on the intracacies of the political and social situation in the Middle East. Written by a NYT writer who also happens to be Jewish, this is a very accessible overview of what happened in that region at the end of the 20th century. Thomas Friedman does a great job of explaining diverse perspectives and offers a very readable account of his experiences living in both Beirut and Jerusalem during those volatile times. Great read to understand the root causes of the problems we face today -- friction b/n the West and Islam & fundamentalist Islam's support of terrorist tactics to obtain political goals.
