This book is an historical review of a young boy's murder during the summer of 1860. Summerscale educates readers on detective work, truly in its infancy, in Victorian England. Whicher, the primary detective, attempts to solve the murder, but his efforts are hampered by the timing of his arrival (two weeks after the murder) and by the lack of assistance from the local police who first investigated the scene. Though the proof he needs is never found, his theory is proven partially correct when a family member confesses to the crime. Summerscale also provides insight on the complex relationships within Victorian families. In this case, the father marries the nanny after the first wife dies. As children are born to the stepmother, new boundaries are created within the family which are thought to be the catalyst for the murder. The first half of the book is slow, but the pace improves once the murderer confesses. Summerscale references several literary works throughout the book which are said to be influenced by the Road Hill Murder.
