This book is a beautiful blend of magic, romance, humor, spirituality and much more. It is crafted with subtlty yet incorporates the bizarre and outrageous. I have read and enjoyed this book several times. Helprin has a gift for looking at the world from an unusual angle. I highly recomend this book.

After reading "My Jim," I realized I may never have actually read Huckleberry Finn. So, now I shall.

Joanne Harris had me hooked from the beginning wondering what the great mystery was from her childhood -and I did not see it coming though the war setting was a clue I suppose! Best character this time turned out not to be bubbling bottles of wine or an imaginary rabbit but the wily pike,Old Mother, closely followed by the stuttering Paul! Not sure if I really warmed to Boise - was she just to grown up and articulate for a 9 year-old? I actually preferred the much older Framboise who returned to the village. The wartime setting in a small occupied French village did have an authentic feel about it!
