Dresden has to attend a horror convention. What an excellent conceit, as Scurra would call it. Molly (Knight of the Cross Michael's daughter) gets into trouble and Dresden has to go in a lot deeper than he expected to pull her out. Butcher is building up a more complex web of relationships between some of the main characters and developing some back stories to flesh out some of the more peripheral characters. We learn more about the functionings of the White Council and the war with the reds. Thomas gets a new job. Some of the Dresden books (especially the early ones)read like episodes in a series. Each start with a new case to solve and end with everything essentially rounded off and complete. If the Dresden files are a series, then this one is an arc episode. Lots of things are explained that you already know something about and maybe even more are left tantalisingly hanging for later. OK, I admit it, he's got me.
