The Espressologist by Kristina Springer (2009): Teenage barista Jane Turner reckons she can tell a lot about someone from their favorite drink... even enough to match them with their soulmate. But when her manager promotes her talent to boost sales, her theories, and her nerves, are put to the test. The “hook” of this book is Jane’s expert “espressology,” but any originality ends there. Despite the fact that romance plots are often formulaic and their endings predictable, this book copied a little too closely from Jane Austen’s Emma for my tastes, providing no real dramatic tension for anyone familiar with the workings of a romantic comedy. Throughout the book Jane skips weeks of classes, talks her way into a promotion she doesn’t seem to deserve, and proceeds to ignore her new responsibilities (such as placing the supply order) with no ill consequences, while her more studious friend Em maintains a 3.8 GPA as well as her job and is rewarded with two heartbreaks. While Starbucks fans may find the “insider” coffee knowledge interesting, I would recommend Meg Cabot’s YA romances or Jody Gehrman's Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty over this debut novel.

I have so much respect for Hillary. This book only helped to solidify that.
