I picked up this book after seeing it plastered all over bookstores and hearing Paolini being declared a child prodigy or some such nonsense. As a fantasy fan, I figured I'd check it out. This book just read to me like Paolini inserting himself into his favorite books in the form of his main character, Eragon. The plot screamed out "Star Wars" and the setting screamed "Lord of the Rings". The writing did nothing to redeem it. It was just one giant, over-rated fanfiction. How it got published I will never understand, I've heard that his parents had some connections in the publishing world, though I don't know how true that is.
A book that was on my list of things that I really should get around to reading someday. I'm glad to be able to finally cross it off the list. It's quite good and somewhat haunting. It's distopian nature strongly emphasized, and yet the distopia has an eerie seductiveness that is not always present in the genre. A rather quick read as well (I read most of it on a short plane ride).
