Beautiful, haunting writing. I would describe this as an unlikely coming of age tale. Susie Salmon is raped and murdered at age 14, and narrates The Lovely Bones, looking back on her past life and down on her still-living family, from the confines of her personal heaven. Scenes from this novel are disturbing and the read can be emotionally draining, even depressing. But largely, and conclusively, it isn't sad. It's a very human story about living. Interesting essay in the back of the novel about the strangeness/complexity of suburbia which adds to the text. Sebold is a strange writer, and I mean that positively. Her descriptions and associations sometimes flow in stream-of-consciousness patterns. You might not like her if everything has to be spelled out. She isn't always clear; she is always aesthetically pleasing. I can quote sentences from this book that I liked; I just haven't been able to forget them.
