A powerful Holocaust story. This is a YA (Young Adult) book that has great cross-appeal to adult readers. I selected it for my 13 year old daughter. I read it after she did and I enjoyed discussing the story with her. Having read several non-fiction books dealing with various aspects of the Holocaust, I found this one filled a void for me. The story, narrated by a very clever and funny Death, revolves around a young girl who is sent to live with foster parents in Germany during WWII. On the way, her younger brother dies. The young girl develops a penchant for stealing books and eventually, her new family hides a Jewish man in their home. The story-telling is rich, the characters multidimensional. They stayed with me long after I read the last page.
