I studied Bronze and Iron Age archaeology, even worked on a few sites in England and Ireland. I really, really wanted to like this book. Griffiths' archaeological research is superb. But she tipped off the murderer too soon, then threw in some red herrings too late. That doesn't always bother me. In a good mystery, "whydunit" can be as interesting as "whodunit" if you've already figured out the latter. In the end, however, the lack of surprise coupled with the present tense prose left me unsettled and disappointed.
