I liked (I probably would have loved it if it had stayed “sick and twisted, dark and mostly devoid of humor”—worked for me in David Gunn's Death's Head series featuring Sven) Alphas: Origins by Andrews (Cedric, the bear-dog a child can ride like a horse and Lucas—subspecies 30 really sold it), but I could do without the other stories, although I do like other works by Singh and Brook.
