Oh man. This book is overdue to the library but I just can't let it go quite yet. The book contains rare and in many cases previously unseen comics artwork from the first half of the 20th century. I'm already an enormous fan of Herbie, Slim Jim and White Boy. This may be the best book I read all year and it's only February.

When I finished this book, I thought, this would make a great movie. Lo and behold, it is indeed being made into a movie in India - probably next year. This book is a grand ol' yarn, in the great tradition of grand ol' yarns, teeming with tiny memorable cameos, episodic yarns within yarns, interlocking points that delight. A recurring theme in the stories that Ram Mohammed Thomas (suitably named for the wide spectrum of Indian experiences he has in his life) tells in the telling of how he came to the knowledge that won him a billion rupees in a trivia TV quiz show is the cruelties that people visit upon one another - and as Ram displays in his own compassionate behavior towards others, these cruelties are not inevitable desperate acts of the impoverished - not the result of bad luck - but guided by choice. I have a tendency to read layers of meaning into pop culture products - and perhaps this one was not really intended by the author, a diplomat and first-time novelist - but it does seem to me that, especially with the final scene ("Luck comes from within"), Vikas Swarup seems to be making a statement about personal, moral agency. But don't listen to me - this is, ultimately, a light read, entertaining and clever.
