this is beautiful and transcendent. her linking of these familiar/unfamilar stories is just amazing. though she uses "old tales," she is able to make them all feel fresh and keep us really from knowing how things tie up at the end. when was the last time that cinderella surprised you?

Not one of the best Clavell books I've read. I enjoyed it, but I think by this point after reading Shogun, Tai-pan, Noble House and King Rat I was burnt out on the Clavell Asian sagas.
