Sweet fairytale story. Good weekend read.

(Really about 3.5 stars) This big, huge fantasy story is a decent read. The central characters of Richard Cipher, Kahlan the Mother Confessor and Zedd the Wizard of the First Order are enjoyable and they have some interesting adventures. There's a nice growth to Richard Cipher's character that sort of snuck up on me. He was annoying for quite awhile as he had to learn about his new role in the world - The Seeker who shall wield the Sword of Truth and defeat the bad guy. But he does finally mature and develops some wisdom over the course of his adventures. The main bad guy (Darken Rahl) is one depraved, evil wizard. His harem of torturers (The Mord'Sith) are just as nasty and how they are trained is a horror story all it's own. Be forewarned: this book occasionally delves into the real "ugly of evil" within this fantasy world and some readers may find those parts beyond their spectrum of what's tasteful. If you CAN stomach those ugly parts of the story, you'll be rewarded with a decent tale of heroes and villains. And for those who have read the book, don't ya just love the title...

Tan's a bit loosing her 'touch'. Her portrayal of somewhat mystical ancient burma is not entirely convincing.
