Reread this as a companion to Netherland by Joseph O'Neill. I had forgotten so many things about this book: it is short, there're more love stories beyond Gatsby and Daisy (there's her husband Tom and his mistress Myrtle and Nick's flirtation with Jordan Baker) and there is a deadly accident and basically a murder. What I had remembered: Gatsby's parties (and his funeral), his shirts, his love and longing and the setting. Also, reading it some 20 or more years later, I have a better appreciation of the language and the times. At one point, Jordan basically insults two girls at a party but still conspiratorially whispers about Gatsby -- he inspires secrecy among those who have no self-censorship. Not the most moving story I've read -- it doesn't have the emotional resonance Netherland has, but then again, I'm married with children, not a single, 30-year old bond trader so it may just be my relationship to the narrators -- but definitely worthy of its place in the literary canon.
