Wow. This story is so good, and so well told. It's impossible to put down. And after reading it, very difficult to stop thinking about the characters, especially Ree. She has so much courage and lives with such integrity in a completely bleak and constrained existence. Woodrell depicts several shocking events and yet, they are in context and utterly believable, as are the relationships that Ree has with other characters. In particular, her friendship with Gail feels like one tender nanosecond experienced in an otherwise hard, comfortless life. I didn't know what to hope for as the book approached the ending but I wasn't disappointed. Curious now to see the movie.
