I loved this book, but it didn't feel complete? Luckily, I've just discovered it's part of a series, and the next part will be out in October 2007. Sometimes I felt that things weren't properly described, but that just added to the surreal tone of the book. It might not be for everyone, though. Reread in January 2012: How did I ever rate this as 5 stars? The story and the worldbuilding is awesome -- and I've never liked Alice in Wonderland, so that's saying something -- but the execution is terrible. The idea of card soldiers and chessmen and travelling through looking glasses etc. all makes for a fantastic backdrop, but without exception the characters in this world are all one-dimensional. The only character I can forgive for being flat is Hatter Madigan, because with his Millinery training he's supposed to be emotionless. But it was impossible to warm to Alyss or Dodge or anyone else. I can't help feeling that another author would have done this book justice.
