Beautiful imagery and prose, I'm not sure how much I agree with or fully understand it's overall theme, morality. This is magical realism based on New York, time of the Industrial Revolution; hard up immigrants, tenement houses, and then lots of grand, attractive elegant elegant characters who wine, dine and dance at lovely parties. Mark Helprin is also a sometime conservative commentator.

Good suspense but totally improbable.
