This one deviated a LOT from the typical Redwall story line. Usually the story takes place at the Abbey where peaceful woodland creatures enjoy their peaceful woodland life. This is life is threatened, a warrior and a smart creature figure out mysterious puzzles sent my Martin the Warrior to figure out how to bring down the baddie that wants to disrupt the peace. In this one, the story takes place on the shore at the evil Badrang's fortress Marshank. Its been awhile since I read the first three but I think I remember Martin having a mysterious past. This book unclears this past and explains where Martin came from and how he came to Redwall Abbey to be the hero. What made this such a different book from the others is its darkness. There is always death and sadness but its usually balanced by a lot of sweetness and sillyness. In this story we lose some very important characters leaving the end very dark and unknowing, not the usually happy feast celebrating the victory. I was starting to lose my interest in Redwall, but thanks to this book, I'm back in!!
