This book pleasantly surprised me. I was even more impressed after I finished it and read that Ruth Ozeki didn't even set out to write a book about the meat industry. I think for that reason it doesn't come across as preachy and stands alone as a great story. Among the many topics covered are ethnicity, commercialism, capitalism, "womanhood", marriage, fertility, environmentalism, violence against women, adoption, race and sexuality.
