This has been my summer of dystopian novels. This kind of world would be my worst nightmare, no reading and no children. Yikes! It certainly gave me a lot to think about. Especially in regards to how wonderful it is to be in a family, and to love and be loved. This book talks a lot about the mindless effect that drugs and TV have. As I move to the end of summer with my kids I think I'll be unplugging the TV and computers for a few days, for more reading! This book does have some language and graphic scenes, but I read on.

I was immediately engrossed in this book and read it very quickly. It has all the things I like about historical fiction, like the broad scope of time and geography, and the way that the haggadah and the people associated with it served as this continuous throughline. After I read it, though-- and this is probably an issue with me and not with the book at all-- but after I finished then novel and read Brooks's afterword where she describes the real-life inspiration for the story I wished I had read a true history of the Sarajevo Haggadah, probably because I was disappointed that the beautiful story Brooks tells wasn't true. It's really a very good book, though, and I recommend it.
