When my mother brought me this book, I laid it aside because it didn't seem like something that would interest me: too sappy. However, I picked it up one day when I needed a total break and was immediately intrigued. The plot is predictable, but Pilcher writes well enough to make you care about the characters and what happens to them. She is also excellent at setting scenes; you truly see the houses and villages the characters inhabit. I won't seek out any other Pilcher novels, but I won't automatically toss one that comes my way.
