I saw the movie first-(great performances by Jack Black, Samantha Morton, Dennis Hopper)--and I have to say this is one of those rare times where one doesn't ruin the other. I reccomend both. I acutally think they accompany eachother nicely because as a novella, its hard to see where the stories converge, whereas watching a film is naturally a more linear process. Anyways--very well written, pretty meaningful, and def. has staying power in my memory. "He'd wasted his entire life. Such people were very dear to us who'd only wasted a few years."

I read this book in my Contemporary American Poetry class, my sophomore year in college. While writing poetry for my whole life, and taking Lyrical Poetry the previous had also influenced me, this book cemented the fact in me that I always wanted to create and write poems - not necessarily publish them, just create them.
