This book examines the intertwining lives of 4 very different characters in mid-1970s India. The larger upheaval of Indira Ghandi's state of emergency declaration is played out in the smallest of scales as we experience the protagonists' day to day struggles. I was impressed with how smoothly the author weaves the 4 stories together as they meet and diverge, even skipping back at moments to fill in the back story. Although the narrative is tightly focused on the main characters, the scope of the issues involved (caste struggles, rural vs. urban life, government repression) gives the novel an epic feel. In the end, the author avoids a glib storybook ending, and leaves one with much food for thought. I can't recommend this book enough.

Después de la serie de libros de dragones, había querido leer más de McCaffrey, así que buscando entre sus libros encontré que este también constaba de una gran saga so... después de mucho tiempo me decidí y lo leí. En general no sé si mi opinión se debe al autor en sí, al traductor o a la edición, pero los textos se sentían desordenados, tan así que se me dificultaba saber quién hablaba cuando se trataba de dos o mas personajes conversando. Hasta el final del libro no me dí cuenta de que uno de los personajes en lugar de ser mujer, era un hombre mayor y el título del libro estropea la historia. Lo que debía ser un descubrimiento (que el planeta esta lleno de dinosaurios) lo puedes imaginar tan sólo en el título. No digo que la historia sea mala, en general es buena y ya comencé a lee los primero párrafos del siguiente libro, tan sólo para saber qué sucedió después del final (que queda en suspenso). Sin embargo ya puedo imaginarme lo que vendrá. El libro está bien, pero no sé si seguiré leyendo el siguiente. Tal vez sólo lea hasta que sepa cuántos años han pasado.

This was a very clever book; it's sort of a British spy story, set in a world where computer science is the key to summoning Cthulhu. Full of clever ideas and injokes which I can't repeat for fear of spoiling them. If you're into computer science, the book is worth reading just for this. The characters were a little bland, but not terrible. The plots were the interesting bit... The first story in this book has a very clever plot which showcases the world nicely; the second story has some interesting ideas, but you can sort of feel the holes where the author runs out of computer-science injokes.
