It took a decade and a half for me to hear about, buy, and read “All Over but the Shoutin’.” I’m sorry it took me so long. Just like I’m sorry it took me so long to find Cormac McCarthy, and several other great American authors. But there’s an awful lot of good books out there. If you haven’t read Rick Bragg yet, you’ve been missing a fantastic author. Mr. Bragg yields an authentic southern voice that comes from a background that doesn’t allow many people into the upper strata of society. Perhaps Mr. Bragg would argue that he is still not in the upper strata of society, that he’s no different than he ever was. And he would probably be correct, with the exception of that Pulitzer and several other remarkable awards. The best I can tell, he’s the type of voice that we need a lot more of in America. When I read this book, he was speaking for me, and all us poor and middle class rural folk. He’s got some righteous anger, as I do, and he’s got it pointed in the right direction. There just isn’t much I disagree with in Mr. Bragg’s worldly outlook. And I liked every page of All Over but the Shoutin’. I’m sorry he and his had it so tough growing up. But he’s as good an example as you can find, of a dirt poor country boy rising to the pinnacles of success –with hard work, determination, and a ton of smarts. May he inspire countless others.
