Apparantly we are doomed. Very interesting ideas

Children's literature is becoming more dark, I've noticed. After hearing that it won the Newbery Award for 2009, I thought that it was something that my little 9-year old girl and I could enjoy together. I wasn't too impressed that it started out with the man Jack killing the father, the mother, and the sister, and looking to kill the little toddler. Lots of places in this book reminded me of Harry Potter, except Harry Potter is much better. My question: Why did this book the Newbery?
