Such a great book. I first read it in early middle school. Just read it again a couple months ago...mystery, fantasy, a touch of the scary, coming-of-age...awesome.

Saramago's labyrinthine prose lures you into the darkness, but somehow you're not afraid. This is a beautifully subtle examination of identity, self-knowledge, and the mysteries of intimacy (or lack thereof). I think some people would complain that not much happens in this book. Those are some of my favorite books. I think internal journeys can be as significant as physical ones.

If you enjoy reading about girls living the debutante life in London in the 1950's you will love. This book is a wonderful book about friendship full of details of fabulous parties full of handsome men and champagne. A terrific escape. A dear friend recommended and I loved.
