I started reading this series because I've been enjoying the TV show on ABC Family. I was surprised to find that the books are not better than the show. They're incredibly superficial and catty and the characters and plots lack depth. The show is a much more satisfying experience overall.

I think this book's movie-script format keeps the pace moving fast. It makes a great discussion book.

Slloowww start, jagged end in the name of trilogy. Publishers need to end this annoying trend and let a work stand for itself. Still, nice concept. If you pick it up, make sure you have the other two in the series. The pace picks up in the second and third books (The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure) and you won't want to be without them. It will be difficult to deal with the cliffhangers and multiple characters without constant access.

This is a slight book that distills the clash between generations in Germany (those that lived during the Holocaust and those that came after) into something very intimate. How do people reconcile the evil of anonymous others with those they love and come from? Even if forgiveness is impossible, do people and societies have to keep the past a "secret" in order to move forward?
