Janzen went back to her Mennonite family and her roots. I found this book to be both hilarious and clever. She doesn't wallow in self pity, but from her perspective as both an insider and an outsider, she mines (thank you to the book cover for this word, it's perfect) the Mennonite culture for her anecdotes of life and love in this community. Within this deliberately simple and very regimented way of life there seem to be some truly eccentric and wonderful people. From her warm but wry tales of her mother, who tries to hook her up with a first cousin (who is a great catch because he owns a tractor),to the "shame-based" recipes for things that they had in their school lunches while the other kids were eating twinkies, she has an eye for the ridiculous in any situation. Excerpt: "Connie Isaac made her first payment to me for babysitting services rendered. She paid me in fresh brown potatoes . I think we can all agree that the lives of most twelve-year-olds improve significantly with an incoming flow of brown potatoes. You may not be able to buy that bootleg lip gloss your heart yearns for, but you can prepare tasty potato dishes for the whole family. And cooking is one thing a Mennonite girl knows how to do". I don't often respond positively to books whose covers shriek "No.1 in the U.S" but this time I did. It's really funny in a disjointed, anecdotal sort of way. Her final piece of advice? "If you have paid close attention to the preceeding pages, you are ready to meet Mennonites in real life. When you do, speak slowly and smile. If you play your cards right, I'm pretty sure they'll offer you some cabbage".
